History of the Club The club was started some 50 years ago on a farm near Leverton, just north of Boston in Lincolnshire. Alex Henshaw, the famous aircraft racer and Spitfire test pilot was brought up in this area. In the 1920s as a boy he raced anything with an engine on the family farm - on two and four wheels. Light weight was important to Alex and there is no doubt that with no other interests karting as we know it would have been developed there and then, however in 1932 whilst still 18 he learned to fly and his father bought him a Gypsy Moth aeroplane. Alex became famous worldwide for both his air race successes and long distance record breaking. At the outbreak of WWII he was enlisted as a test pilot., most famously for the Spitfire; it is estimated he flew 10% of those produced. When the war ended he went to live in South Africa, but returned to the family farm in 1948. He and a friend, Austin Monks devised all sorts of vehicles to race on the farm and in the 1950s had built lightweight vehicles powered by motorcycle engines to race against each other and their friends. They started holding official race meetings on land farmed by the Moffat family at Leverton. The original silver championship trophies presented by the Moffat family are still in use today. Alas we have no records of the original race and championship winners. Some years later the club was renamed Boston Grass Kart club and subsequently some 25 years ago Coningsby & District Grass Kart Club to reflect the general area in which we raced. Racing members come from as far afield as Essex, Northamptonshire and even Scotland. Currently we race monthly on the grass in the summer months - May through to October - with modified karts for off-road use and on the road in the winter months - November through to April - with classes for both road and grass karts. All karts of all classes are welcome at our meetings. We run an annual Track Evening on the full circuit at Cadwell Park, the home of the MSA SuperKart Grand Prix. Separate Winter Road and Grass Championships are held, with annual trophies presented at our February Dinner Dance. Web site kindly provided by KPPMS
